Brahmagnola Steer Success at Beef 2009

19th May, 2009

With approximately 2400 commercial cattle exhibited at the Gracemere Exhibition Centre over Beef 2009 in what is Australia's largest & most prestigious event, winning 3rd place in the Commonwealth Bank Agribusiness Pen of 10 (EU Accredited) Steers 500 - 740kgs (maximum 4 teeth) was like "winning 3rd in the Melbourne Cup" for Romagnola breeder Ron Pullen of Wyoming Romagnola Stud.

The Pullen's had the steers prepared on grain at the Barmount Feedlot, north of Marlborough and nominated four pens in the event.  Two pens in the Savage Barker Backhouse Pen of 10 Steers 360 - 640kg maximum 2 teeth and minimum 70 day Grain Fed Suitable for Local Trade and two pens in the Commonwealth Bank Agribusiness Pen of 10 Steers (EU Accredited) 500 - 740kg maximum 4 teeth.

All steers nominated were Romagnola/Brahman cross steers.  The Pullen family who have been breeding Romagnola cattle for about 20 years, cross full blood Romagnola bulls with high content red Brahman females on their family run property 55kms west of Nebo. "We have three main commercial breeder herds at "Codrilla", two herds that run approximately 60 Brahman bulls that we purchase at Brahman Week in Rockhampton each year and include NCC, Palmvale, Kandoona and Wandilla bloodlines and one breeder herd that runs about 30 Romagnola bulls that we breed ourselves through our Wyoming Romagnola Stud" Ron said.

"We find the Romagnola cross cattle to be extremely valuable to our herd. Not only do they finish well and put size into our Brahman base, but they cross well with any colour beast without giving a brindle effect which means we produce nice lines of quality F1 steers and replacement females".

The four pens of steers also did well at the sale on the Tuesday following the judging with the two pens going for $1.91/kg and the other two pens (including the winning pen) for $1.93/kg.
