Brisbane Ekka 2007

10th August, 2007

The decision was made at the Romagnola Breeder's Society General Meeting that we would support the Ekka as a "Feature Showing" for the breed over the next few years. As the much maligned dry weather took its toll on exhibitors, 3 studs took to the ring with 11 head exhibited between them.

Judge and Australian Brahman Breeder's President Mr Roger Jeffries praised the standard of competition commenting on the uniform quality of the Romagnola cattle paraded before him.

He was happy to not only see that the cattle displayed the power and muscling for which Romagnolas are renowned but that his winners were also active, correct cattle.

The heifer judging saw the 13 month old Theodore Feature Show calf champion Wyoming Breanna claim the Junior Champion female title over Caronte daughter Italia Amaya, who was shown by Romagnola Beef Genetics, Roma.

With 5 head competing for the Senior Champion Female title, Hamilton Park Zarina took all before her once again. This multi award winning young Caronte cow exhibited by Romagnola Beef Genetics went on to win Grand Champion female and stand a credible 6th in the Interbreed Female competition that afternoon. Mr Jefferies described Zarina and her calf at foot by Italia Vasco as "a very tidy unit". "This cow stands over a lot of ground and is doing a great job on her calf" he said. "She has plenty of length and refinement through the front end and really is just a great breeding cow". Wyoming Amity, exhibited by the Pullen family from Nebo, continued on from her success at Theodore where she was sashed Junior Champion female, to win reserve Senior Champion female. She is a full sister to 2005 Ekka Grand Champion bull Wyoming Zac.

Despite a lack of competition in the junior bulls, the 19 month old Wyoming Abe received very positive comment from the judge. Weighing in at 692kgs, with an EMA of 113cm and fat measurements of 3 and 5 mm, Mr Jeffries praised Abe's masculinity and softness.

The senior bull class saw 4 powerful bulls from the Wyoming and Roma studs compete for the broad ribbons. Son of deceased super-sire Italia Padrone, Italia Atticus, was named Senior Champion bull for his correctness, balance and walking ability. Mr Jeffries particularly praised his weight of 830kgs with a phenomenal EMA of 143cm at just 20 months. Last years Reserve Junior Champion bull Wyoming Armando, was judged this years Reserve Senior Champion bull. Mr Jeffries acknowledged his figures of 5mm and 7 mm fat and structural correctness.

The Pullen family and their young sire Wyoming Abe, were victorious in the race for Grand Champion bull. Mr Jeffries praised the sire power of the young Vincente son.
