12th February, 2009
The Red Cross Emergency Services Teams are currently operating at both ends of the country with the flood evacuation and recovery efforts in Northern Queensland and the devastating bushfires in Victoria.
North Queensland Floods
The Queensland Government has launched a Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal Fund. Donations can be made at any of the major banks: Commonwealth, Westpac, NAB, ANZ, Suncorp and Bank of Queensland.
Cheques should be made out to the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal Fund. Donors can also contact the Smart Services Queensland Call Centre on 1800 173 349 with their credit card details. This line will be open 24 hours a day. All donations of $2.00 or more to the appeal will be tax deductible.
Victorian Bushfires
The 2009 Victorian Bushfire Fund to assist individuals and communities affected by the devastating bushfires in Victoria has been launched by the Premier John Brumby in partnership with Red Cross and the Federal Government.
As at 10 February the Fund had received $15.1 million from over 88,000 website and phone donations, with governments including the Victorian Government and the Federal Government and corporates pledging additional sums.
An independent panel made up of community leaders will oversee the appeal Fund's operations.
