Carrie Downs Romagnola Stud
Carrie Downs is located between Clermont and Dysart in the Central Highlands of Queensland, Australia.
Overlooking the Peak Ranges the county is a mix of open black soil plan and undulating hills. The soils vary from cracking black soil on the downs to red volcanic. The country has established itself to buffel.
It was evident to us in the late 80's that cross breeding was the direction of the commercial cattle industry in Queensland. While attending Farm Fest at Toowoomba in 1987 we came upon the Romagnola breed. Later that year we were fortunate enough to visit Gain Romagnola Stud at Jerilderie. Returning to Queensland we sort out and purchased our first Romagnola bull.
Stud Sires
Mooloo Tallis
Sired by one of the best in Elisir, he is producing beautiful soft muscled cattle with good thickness.
The calves are moderate framed with a good temperament. The evenness of the calves is a credit to this bull.

Italia Zeberney
A bull with plenty of height who is used to give some of our females a
lift with very well shaped shoulders, we have no trouble using this bull over our heifers.
The calves are born small and develop quickly again he is producing smooth muscled animals with excellent length. His temperament is outstanding.

Past Sires
A Cesare bull, Mooloo Ruben saw a consistent line of cattle with the excellent trait of small calves. He produced moderate framed animals with very correct feet and udders. He is an outcross of the Italian cattle line so has given our herd the genetic variation we were looking for.
Females
Our foundation females were purchased from one of the original Romagnola breeders Max Fomiatti of Valtellina Stud Ashwood, NSW. These first cows carried a wide cross section of genetics including MMB Binario, Vadis, Scottish Dritto, Valtellina Apollo (Avoncroft Marcus) Friarton Ajax, Valtellina Rocky (Wemala Mike) and Valtellina Bango (Scottish Caesar). At the time they were using new genetic material from Italy which gave the breed a line of outcross genetics.
Our females are of a moderate frame and must produce a calf each year. All calves are born unassisted and develop quickly.
Sale Bulls
Bulls need to survive in the harsh and variable climate. Romagnolas are well placed to suit this challenge. Our bulls are produced to be easy doing and fertile. We don't overlook temperament and soundness. Each year a line is selected for local shows and field days and are fed to show their full genetic value.
A number of paddock prepared bulls are available for sale throughout the year. All bulls are vaccinated with 3 day sickness, 5 in 1 and 3 germ blood. Bulls are worked with horses and are weaned through the yards.
Bulls like these are available for your inspection.
Crossbreeding
An early maturing animal with adequate fat cover is the aim of Carrie Downs.
We were initially attracted to the Romagnola's ability to cross with Brahman cattle. Originally we sold our first cross progeny but over the years we decided to retain the F1 Female as our base. The use of the F1 female as the base of our commercial operation has put a solid foundation to produce for whichever market we prefer.
Our Brahman Romagnola Cross breeder is a superb animal. The mothering ability and milk supply is outstanding. My opinion is that you can cross with any other breed to produce quality cattle and the ability to change the look of the base herd is a bonus.
We have crossed with Brangus, Droughtmaster, Brahman, Santa/Angus Cross and are now trailing Murray Greys. Our latest use of Santa/Angus Bulls have produced weaner heifers averaging 320-330kg in the steer sections 330-350kg at eight - nine months old.
